Dr. Porter, received his undergraduate degree with honors in Biology from Colgate University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from he University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Following medical school he served as a medical missionary in India from 1978 to 1979. Dr Porter then returned to complete a residency in Anesthesiology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, New Hampshire.

In 1983, Dr. Porter came to Atlanta, Georgia as a Fellow in Cardiac Anesthesia at Emory University Medical School. In 1984, he joined a large Atlanta anesthesia practice affiliated with St. Joseph's Hospital of Atlanta, where he practiced until 1996 when he resigned to join The Physicians' Pain & Rehabilitation Specialists of Georgia, P.C.

Dr. Porter is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Anesthesiology and has received the Subspecialty Certification in Pain Management which is granted by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is a member of the American Society of Pain Medicine, American Pain Society, the Neuromodulation Society and several state & local pain societies. Dr. Porter's interest in Pain Medicine has evolved since residency research in the areas of pain neurochemistry and the effects of Beta Endorphin modification of pain during labor and child birth. His current areas of clinical interest include early intervention for acute back pain with rapid return to work , endoscopy of the epidural space and pain neurochemistry.
